Google + MySpace = Nail in the Microsoft Search Coffin?
Social networking and amateur porn powerhouse MySpace has inked a deal with the world's most powerful voyeur, Google. Google will pay about $900 million over three years and nine months for the privilege of serving search results and advertising to MySpace's 100 million The G Poppa will also power search and ads for other Fox Interactive properties, including RottenTomatoes.com and Scout.com. MySpace search was previously powered by Yahoo. The deal is obviously a win for Google, which is paying to keep its competitors out and banking on the continued strength of MySpace. Google will also benefit from watching how MySpace users navigate through the huge network, which may help Google's own social networking plans. Unlike Microsoft and Yahoo, Google doesn't have a robust social networking infrastructure. It's also interesting to note that MySpace did not contract with Microsoft for search. MySpace's infrastructure is almost completely MS-based. The two companies were lovey-dovey at the Mix06 conference in Vegas earlier this year, when CEO Aber Whitcomb presented how Microsoft helped MySpace scale. Combined with Google's 5% deal with AOL, the MySpace agreement has got to put a hurting on Microsoft. Wonder what happened? |

Can one really blame MySpace for the perverts who are on it? Is everyone who is on MySpace a pervert just because there are a few? Is every Catholic a child molester because of a few sick priests? Are all white people racist because of a few bigots? Try not to judge an entire group of people based on a few who choose to operate outside the rules of society.

I would hardly call MySpace a "porn powerhouse". You can't judge the site based on a few idiots who feel the need to exploit themselves. Since the site launched, MySpace has been cracking down on those people and the site is being used a lot more for what it was created for in the first place. It's a place for friends and to find interesting people like ourselves that we can talk to.

I think it's hilarious to call MySpace an amateur porn powerhouse - I had to deny a webcam group invitation just today and am constantly turning down friend invites from porno boys and girls. Selling sex on MySpace isn't confined to a few idiots exploiting themselves - the advertisers are there to exploit themselves too, as is evidenced by the dating service ads with young half-naked chicks and dudes, not to mention the clothing ads featuring big boobs in tiny tops, etc. I hate those ads as much as I hate 'Katie', an 18 yr old co-ed from Blah Blah who likes to blah blah blah and oh yeah, get naked on a webcam for the 'handy' fee of whatever $ per/(blank). So there's a bunch of morons in various forms on MySpace. They're everywhere, folks, MySpace is just the next thing for mass hysteria to get off on. You can certainly use it for friends, blowjobs, advertising your band, whatever, 'cause hey, people with freedom use it. Get over it.

Steve, Great journalism. Out of all the other stories I read about this deal, yours was the most entertaining to read. These people are very sensitive about the funny comments you make of MySpace. Why should someone be so defensive? Does it mean that maybe THEY are the pervs and pornstars worrying about being uncovered in their own little profiles on MySpace? Hmm... makes ya wonder.

Steve, I DO wonder why Google ended up partnering with MySpace instead of Microsoft. Could it be that Google enjoys challenging the monopolist in any arena possible? They aren't going to win business desktops on any meaningful level - even by giving away the applications. Perhaps they enjoy the whole David and Goliath dynamic? Could Myspace be the stone that knocks the ball out of the park in this space?

who in the world is "Steve Bryant" ? google him on myspace, he's looking for amateur porn , evidently is the most relevant thing he know about myspace. Most likely the only thing he uses myspace for. Said so, maybe Google will prove to be a useful tool when looking for perv's accounts on myspace. Eventually google could help to weed myspace out and make it safer.
