Why No 9/11 Tribute Logo, Google?

ask 911 tribute Google likes its logo graphics. The signature logo changes, drawn by Google Webmaster Dennis Hwang, appear on Google's home page for a variety of events, including (but not limited to) celebratory occasions like July Fourth, esoteric holidays such as Persian New Year, and the World Cup. The logos are such an ingrained part of Web topology that sites like Fark spoof the graphics.

But where's the 9/11 logo, Google? Does the event incite too many conflicting emotions? Arouse too much passion on both sides of the political spectrum? Are you worried about politicizing your otherwise impartial technology? Ask.com changed their home page, why didn't you?

Or maybe you made a deliberate choice not to change your logo because it was the right thing for your corporate culture? I don't usually ascribe any great virtue to a corporation, but maybe you read Jacob Bronowski's speech at MIT and noted when he said the oddly virtuous scholar does "not try to persuade at any cost, they appeal neither to prejudice nor to authority."

I dunno. Maybe you think there's something hollow in public tribute and its endless cascade of reiterations on television, radio and the Web. Maybe you think the 9/11 image is as empty of meaning as Ground Zero is empty of steel right now. Maybe you think our mourning has been turned into just one more packaged good. Maybe, like me, you've read too much J.G. Ballard or Marshall McLuhan. Hell, maybe Dennis is just on vacation.

Anyway, I'm not the flag-waving type. I'm just wondering why you skipped September 11.

F Graham :

Maybe out of respect for the lives that were lost? Maybe if you looked at the Google logos you would see that they are celebratory. Also take note that they don't have days such as Memorial or Remembrance Day. Get off your anti-Google high horse and actually look at the facts.

Ben :

Who really cares? You must really be running out of things to write about!

Mister :

Because Red China told them not to.

Dave :

Because they'd also need a logo for the tens of thousands killed in Iraq.

James :

Kinda curious of something. If you aren't a "flag-waving type", why carry on the way you did? Please. Google is not a US only site, it is a global site. If they did a 911 logo, then they would need to do one for every other place that has been bombed and innocent people killed. Jeez. That would fill not only every day in the year, but would not repeat the same logo for the next century. Basically, in a nutshell, GET OVER IT! and move on to more important issues.

Dan :

id stay well clear of the politics and concentrate on humping Microsoft (WHAT KIND OF LOGO WOULD THEY USE ANYWAY)

flubluflu :

Where is your change of logo? As said above the Google logo change is about a celebration, and this is nothing to celebrate. It's clear...

? :

I missed it... what tribute logo did eWeek use yesterday?

Name Required :

Why no meat in this blog, Steve? Your mug next to the name of your blog, which you co-opted from the tinfoil hat guy, doesn't count. eWeak.

Vince Foster :

Maybe it's because their advisor, and largest shareholder, Al (the world's burning) Gore didn't want them to!

You weren't there, you didn't see it, you didn't smell it, your friends weren't murdered by the Islamics, so you don't know. 9/11 should be a day of rememberance across the planet. As for the people dying in Iraq, that's an Islamic thing. It's nothing to them. You wouldn't slice the head off a chicken, they think nothing of slicing the head off a human. That's in their blood. You went to Sunday and heard about the Baby Jesus, they went to Friday School and learned all about the Warrior Mohammed and how he slaughtered anyone he thought might be his enemy. They are killing eachother because it is their meat, their game. It has nothing to do with America. We need to be there to help them sort out right from wrong, if you don't think so, better buy a burqa for your wife, mom, grandmother, and sister because someday, somehow, if you don't stop them over there, they will bring their strange machinations here. Wake up. Stop the crank.

F Graham :

Hey Mike, you ever wonder to yourself, why did they do it? How about the thousands of Palestinians who have been slaughtered since the creation of Israel? Using your logic of the deaths of some 3000 Americans, there should also be a day of remembrance for them... but this is about Google, and they have celebrations. Silly blog entry to begin with, if you ask me.

Darnell Clayton :

Sheesh! The Google Video blog already made a highlight to 9/11 on "Commemorating 9/11: 7 Days in September." What more could you ask from them?

someone :

a google 9/11 logo for google? Get a life. Is there no real news to talk about? (No I dont have any suggestions for you)

Christine :

I asked the same question. Here's the answer I got. I wasn't really satisfied with it. __________________________________________ Thank you for your inquiry regarding a September 11 homepage logo. We understand the importance of this day and your interest in commemorating its anniversary. If we were to create a September 11 logo, we'd want to express reverence. However, Google's special logos tend to be lighthearted in nature, and we wouldn't want to create a graphic that could be interpreted as disrespectful in any way. We appreciate your taking the time to share your feedback with us. Regards, The Google Team ______________________________________________ by the way, I liked your blog entry
