Google Maps Surfacing Hotel Prices to Battle Bing

Google's experiments with integrating more of its search advertising experience into Google Maps continued March 22 with the revelation that the company is now serving up prices for some hotel listings. Both Google Maps and Bing Maps are narrowing the gap between search and ads and the e-commerce transactions the search and ads are intended to facilitate.

Google, Bing Battle for Better Disambiguation, AI

Two fine articles on search engine technology landed in our laps to noodle over this week. One piece focuses on Google and the other Microsoft's Bing platform. Google is kicking tail and taking names in search now, but who knows whether the Bing guys or some other outlier we're not watching closely might swoop in with a new search engine construct that leverages AI like we've never seen before.

Bing Maps Bests Google Maps in Fun, if Not Functionality

Microsoft's Bing team trotted out a new version of Bing Maps Dec. 2 that eschews AJAX for the company's Silverlight technology. In short, Bing Maps' graphics are amazing compared with Google Maps. Google Maps obviously has many more layers than Bing Maps. But you can bet Bing will get there.

Microsoft's Bing team and Google's search group are hosting big search technology events within a week of one another in San Francisco. It's fun to watch this Bing-Google slugfest, something we weren't able to enjoy until Bing emerged from the Live Search cocoon in June.
