Google may be sensitive to end users, but what about startups, which Google can lift up or crush with its practices? As much as Google takes pains not to be evil, it certainly does things that hurt others, even if unintentionally.

Reframe It believes Google's Sidewiki looks and feels a little too much like its own Web annotation service. While the similarities on the hood of both apps are hard to ignore, Google would likely argue that the ranking technology under its hood is where the real differences lie. What do you think?

The "Is Google Evil?" debate is one big Christmas gift that keeps on giving for bloggers, pundits and aficionados. The latest offering comes from Google CEO Eric Schmidt and Google co-founder Sergey Brin's jaunt to New York City this week, where they spoke with reporters for nearly 90 minutes at Google's Chelsea office.

Google shelled out nearly $1 million in the second quarter lobbying the federal government and others on behalf of all of its businesses, core or marginal. That Google is even comparing itself to two of the largest technology providers in the world and the two biggest phone carriers is hardly what I would have expected.

A new Wired article compares Google's octopus-like approach to search and Web services to Microsoft's multifaceted presence in desktop software. The piece paints a damning picture of Google as a company that has accrued such sway over the search market that its sheer size is prohibitive for any entrant hoping to make a go of it in the business of organizing the world's information.

Google just released an application for the G1 smartphone from HTC that helps sight-impaired people dial their phones. It turns out, of course, that the app is also popular among sighted people. I guess that proves the old saw that sometimes you can do well by doing good.
