Google Moves Gmail Labels Up, Jettisons Right-Side Labels

Google's Gmail team has altered its labels feature in a major way, moving them to the left of the in-box, and adding drag and drop and other navigation capabilities. These changes are rolling out today, July 1.

Gmail labels essentially do what folders do, but let users add more than one to a conversation. Once you create a label, you can view all the messages with that label by searching, or by clicking the label name along the left side of any Gmail page.

Google has now moved labels above the chat list, grouped together with Inbox, Drafts, Chats and other labels. Previously, Google kept labels in the lower left-hand corner of the in-box navigation screen.

Michael Leggett, a Gmail user experience designer, said only 29 percent of Gmail users were using labels, which he attributed to them being hidden from the user: "Not only were 'labels' unfamiliar, they were kind of hidden. So, we set out to make labels more accessible, as well as more powerful."

To wit, users now have control over which labels are showing, and may choose to show, hide or delete a label by clicking the down arrow to the left of that label. To edit labels in bulk, go to the Labels tab under Settings.

Do you love that you can drag and drop e-mail messages into your folders in e-mail clients such as Outlook? You can now drag messages into labels the same way. You can also drag labels onto messages. To label or move many messages at once, select the messages and then drag and drop the label.

Google said you can also drag labels into the "More" menu to hide them and vice versa instead of going to the Settings menu to add or drop labels.

These changes made it easier for Google to squash its Right-Side Labels experimental Gmail Labs feature, as Google Software Engineer Damian Gajda wrote:

Now that labels aren't in their own little box and take up much less space, moving them around the screen didn't seem as important. We realize quite a few of you used and liked Right-side Labels, so if you feel strapped for left nav screen real estate without it, try turning on Right-side Chat in Labs instead.

More interestingly, Google said Right-Side Labels is the first Labs feature it's retiring, adding that "the idea behind Labs was always that things could break or disappear at any time or they might work so well that they become regular features. More on that soon."

My question are: What does Google mean by that? More on what soon? More Gmail feature squashing, or regular feature inclusion, or both?

I'm asking because the Gmail text chat feature has been knocked out for a week now. Could Google be considering nixing that feature, which has proven mighty popular and sometimes invaluable to users? Google's Gmail team doesn't want that blood on its hands.

UPDATE: A Google spokesperson got back to me with the following: "We're currently working on reinstating SMS chat, which means that it's only temporarily disabled. We will be retiring some Labs features, but we haven't yet decided which ones."

Circling back, if you're a labels user, I'd love to hear what you think about the move. If you aren't a labels user, will you consider it now that Google has made these changes?

RRRAAAAAAAA I want my labels RIGHT SIDE!! I'm OK with change BUT dang I really use labels. Meaning I have 30 plus labels! ALL my mail features are at left. Yeah sure I could do the right chat gadget but what about everything else sitting at left. The labels right balanced everything out. I know I'm being the big OCD nerd but dang if we have the ability to drag features around why not RIGHT!!

XYZ :

Left side labels suck.

New drag-and-drop is useless since it can be done while viewing a message, you must still use Move To menu.

Hiding labels is useless since, now that they're on the left side, you still have to vertical scroll all over the place to use GMail (didn't have to do that when they were on the right).

Total crap.

mesuth :

There must be an option to show labels with unread messages before the remaining labels.

morelation :

I hate it too!!!
Unbelievable, that Google gives us no options about where to view the labels. I have also very much of them. Now, everything is on the left and just a tiny little box to chat is on the right...!
Why can“t drag the old labels-box to somewhere?

CJ :

I love labels, I use gmail because I want labels and not folders. So I don't need them make labels more like folders for me!

I want my labels on the right where I can see them all without them clogging up the left (where I have tasks, and my calendar gadget). Moving them to the left, as they have, have actually made them far less visible.

Did they consider that maybe the main reason people don't use labels much is that the search functionality is so good that you don't need to organise everything into groups (folders or labels) just to be able to find something?

I want right-side labels back. Sure I can turn on right side chat, but that still means lots of vertical scrolling on my part. With the labels on the right side, theirs far less vertical scrolling (I use labels extensively).

bob101 :

I loved having my labels on the top right, I could see them all. Now the are part way hidden on the left. Worse the label box was gray and showed up very well.

Suddenly the labels are now on the left and the really bad is they are no longer outlined in gray but are now the background color.

I HATE this change. My labels are now much less visable and I have to scroll to see them all.

This is what I think - they decided this was getting in the way of the adsense ads they want to fill that location so they nixed labels to make room for bigger better ads.

Now my adsense ads that fill that location are wider then they were before.

Bastards....

I wonder: Maybe we all need a few days to get used to the labels revisions? Or should Google bring back right-side labels and keep the new changes?

Erik :

"Get used to the revisions"? No, what I need to get used to are my workarounds, as I attempt to recreate functionality I used to have.

It was very powerful to use filters to send incoming mail directly into "folders", bypassing the Inbox. When a seldom-used label suddenly showed an unread message, it stood out.

Now, if I hide the seldom-used labels, a new message appearing in one will not be obvious. In order to make sure I don't miss anything, I'll need to show all the labels, or else change my filters so that everything appears in the Inbox. Neither choice is optimal.

Note to Google: two ideas that would have worked well: an option to hide seldom-used labels as long as there are no unread messages in them, and to automatically show a label if a new unread message appears in it.

At the moment, I discovered a link at the top of the page which allows me to use an "old version" of Gmail. But being at their mercy erodes a lot of trust and convenience I've built up over many years.

Sadly, I may have to investigate alternatives. I didn't think driving away faithful customers was part of a corporate plan, but this forced "upgrade" is convincing me otherwise.

soob :

I want my right-side labels back. With right-side labels, i could see most of them while viewing the top of my mailbox. Now if I want to keep my calendar snippet visible, I can only see a fraction of my labels

Thanks all for speaking your word about this major change! I am also very disenfranchised with gmail right now! I believe that it was a google engineer who built the right side labels... and so many of us have grown to rely on it. From a usability standpoint it really makes the most sense. I think that the developers who made this change to how labels work, are really just making gmail more complicated, going against the beauty of gmail its simplicity.

Please please bring back the right side labels feature!

welja :

Why haven't they made the change optional.
I use folder4gmail (which now is broken because this new label system) and it worked fine.

Now i am forced to use another system which cripples my workflow.

I have a paid account, a normal company would take care not to offend it's users.

They are nuts there at Google.

Paul Trinque :

Thanks for the information on the SMS being removed from Gmail. I use it multiple times a week and today it's gone. Thanks again. Paul

Silvio :

I'm a labels user and am very sad that you have removed the possibility to move the labels to the right (right side labels feature from labs).
I also didn't like the fact that it's not possible to drag and drop the labels using the navbar drag and drop feature any more.
Sadly this isn't an improvement for me. It's a back step.

le tigre :

want my labels back on the right side!!!

using more than 5-6 labels gets stuff pretty messy and u'll have to scroll down 2 drag'n drop... sucks!

drag'n drop only applys labels to one mail - not to selected - making the feature comp. nonsense...

Christen :

Please let the google rep that yold that only 29% of users use labels, that they have effectively angered that percentage of their users!!! I loved gmail but I am now actively investigating other email options.

Forcing labels to the left side and enabling drag and drop is NOT helpful. Drag and Drop is practically useless if you use the keyboard shortcuts that gmail encourages you to use.

*sigh*

Shar :

I am all for the dragging and dropping of labels. It sucks that I cannot move the labels back to the right hand side. Having the labels on the right side was more esthetically pleasing for email viewing.

Cadsjo :

It's a nice, new feature the drag and drop of labels/emails but the overview has been much better with the right side labels. I have 40+ labels, now I can see only 10. So, now I am missing a lot of (direct) information.

Google, please bring back the right side labels or a good alternative.

J Brian Terry :

PLEASE, Google, bring back right side labels. This new label hiding functionality is crap, in my opinion. I wouldn't create labels that I want to hide because I use filters to move mail into them. Now I either have to "show" them all, or click the down arrow and scroll to see what emails have arrived. When they were on the right side, all I had to do was look. Now, you're wasting my ing time. Ever see the movie Heat? Remember what Al Pacino said to the dude about wasting his time? Yeah, you got it.

Artem :

Maybe you know what the number at the label mean?

E.g.,:

Fun (4) -- what does this "4" stand for and how can I get rid of it?

Thanks

Mary Beth :

I really miss the labels on the right. I used them all the time, and could see them very well spread out on the right, to see the unread message count in filters, quick access to check contents of certain labels, etc. I really hate the way everything is crowded on the right now, it reduces the utility of the other gadgets I have there. I also suspect, as someone else pointed out, that they were just trying to free up ad space. I am really not happy with this!

Daniel :

... and after 5 years i say goodbye to Gmail...

lilbyrdie :

I also used and relied on right side labels -- I have about a dozen I use regularly and even more I use weekly. Reducing the scroll was great, and putting them just to the right of the "multiple inboxes" was important for screen layout that didn't require huge scrolling. Unfortunate decision, to be sure, but it's their choice.

Our entire team dislikes the new label. The #1 reason we moved our business to Gmail were the labels and the way they functioned. Now it is starting to look and feel like any other email application.
If you are going to make changes allow the changes to happen but don't force it on them.
We already have a system we prefer so please allow us to keep it that way.
Everything is so cluttered on the left side of the page now. We even have to scroll now...this does not make productivity easier.
