Google Pads Search Lead, Again
In April, Google continued to pull away from competitors Yahoo and Microsoft in terms of how often people use its search engine, according to new research from ComScore Networks. ComScore reported May 22 that some 43.1 percent of all Internet searches in April went through one of Google's search engines. That means Google's share of the Internet search market rose by7 percentage points compared to what it was in April 2005. Meanwhile, in April the other top search engines each lost market share, ComScore said, presumably to Google. No. 2 Internet search provider Yahoo's share of Internet search fell from 30 percent in April 2005 to 28 percent in April 2006. Microsoft MSN Search share dropped 4 percentage points to 12.9 percent in April 2006. Meanwhile American Online sunk to 6.9 percent in April 2006, from 9 percent a year ago. Google's also dominating when it comes to the number of searches it hosts. Consider this: In April, Google's 1.9 billion total of search queries was twice that of Yahoo, the No. 2 search engine, during the same time period. April 2006 was the ninth straight month, according to ComScore, that Google's increased its market-leading share of Internet searches. |

Lets face it, Google is by far better than all the insignificant others. The only reason MSN is in this list, is that Microsoft is using the only marketing technique they know - force. The only reasons one may find himself searching MSN, is that either he was tricked to searching when he used another MS product, or that he is not too familiar with the internet, and was led to MSN by MS conventional marketing. The fact that Google is visited by people voluntarily says it all. The only achilles heel I see in Google's future, is the fact that the AdSense (sponsored links affiliate program) is used by many scam sites (aka link farms) to generate revenue and polute the net. Way to go Google, keep an eye on the AdSense plan.

totally agreed ^^ i personally love google and everything they gain at the expense of others (microsoft/yahoo) just makes my day. i hate yahoo cos the search sucks and microsoft doesnt deserve to dominate another field that they will only do a half-assed job in. let's face it: google 0wns the search engine and they rightfully deserve the success. i also agree with the MSN/google adsense statements from "Google Fan" above... google really needs to watch that ^^

I happen to like Microsoft and I'm also a fan of Google. Google scares MS and for good reason. This war is good for consumers. This is one war I would not want to see an end to.

The only reason MSN is in this list, is that Microsoft is using the only marketing technique they know - force. - Google fan I disagree; Microsoft is a very well developed marketing company. They have a very wide variety of tools in their marketing arsenal; you are discrediting them by suggesting that there aren't others. In any case, I agree with the proposition that MSN search pales in comparison to the other two large search engines. "This war is good for consumers." - Omar Khouri I think that calling competition a "war" is rather extreme. I do hope that no company illegally creates a monopoly in this space, as certain companies (including Microsoft) have successfully done in certain other markets.

I think Google is by far the best search engine. i was using MSN for about a week because it is my companies home page...I hated it and tried yahoo since I could check mail on the home page for that...again i hated it...Google time and time again makes the most number of relevant hits for a search.

When will Microsoft simply accept that another software company excels at something Microsoft does poorly?

Google is better than microsoft because in google results we do not see any DATING or immorality and adult contents such as Man meet woman etc. Also Gmail is the best.

MSN, Y and G are all great marketing companies. The facts are this... 1. Google uses incoming links (not content) to rank sites. 2. Yahoo sells space in their results. 3. MSN has a new engine. So the more links to have the better and more relevant the site is? I think not. While none of these, and any of the other engines are perfect I find it difficult to swallow that a 5 year old site with alot of incoming links is more relevant that a site built last year (were talking Google here). The best advice is...to use all 3 (or more) engines and find the information that you are looking for. Don't put all your eggs in one basket, as the saying goes...If you are looking for new content use MSN.

Keep in mind that Google powers AOL's search engine -- so you have to add AOL's market share to Google's!

Ok great news for google and yahoo both but hey people its google all around us we cannot deny the fact that a user early in the morning will open GOOGLE first and then at some time yahoo GOOGLE is the present and the future. If other people like YAHOO do want to take care of GOOGLE they should merge with GOOGLE

google is a verb. Yahoo and MSN will never catch up because all we talk about is "googling" this and "googling" that

Google is quick and to the point. Msn.com portal page is riddled with flash, obnoxious cookies, spyware ads, and junk. yuck!. Msn search still returns too much unrelated and duplicate hits. Yahoo portal page is too busy for me, and their search results don't quite measure up to google. Google is still King and probably will be for the foreseeable future...

MS is very scare of the future, google is going for the browser based "everything" world. That may include an office suite, search engine, all the tools you need to get on with your day. MS is saying, wait a sec, they want to do what? No Operating System tie? We can't use the OS bundle trick to bankrupt our competitors? MS is so used to that business model it is not funny.

Google's Q2 earnings call takes place this Thursday at 1:30pm PST. So, in the grand tradition of IBM's football ads, we're asking you, our friendly neighborhood readers, to make the call.
