How do you counter criticism that you are a greedy giant that likes to pummel user privacy for profit? Show you can be open and then show how much money companies are making because of your products. Google did both this week.

Google Adds Flu Shot Finder to Google Maps

Following its roll out of Google Flu Trends to 20 countries, Google this week added a U.S.-centric "flu-shot finder" in conjunction with the U.S. Department for Health and Human Services (HHS). The site actually tracks seasonal flu shots and H1N1 (swine flu) virus shots. Both are in scarce supply.

Google's Free Virgin America Wi-Fi Shows Search Engine Is No Grinch

Google is offering free in-flight Wi-Fi on every Virgin America flight from Nov. 10, 2009, through Jan. 15, 2010. This is a clever promotion for the holidays at a time when companies are still staggering from the recession but need to send employees to business meetings. Companies, that is, that aren't Google.

Google May Be Evil, but Not Wicked

Google just released an application for the G1 smartphone from HTC that helps sight-impaired people dial their phones. It turns out, of course, that the app is also popular among sighted people. I guess that proves the old saw that sometimes you can do well by doing good.
