Google Docs Viewer Comes to Android, iPhone, iPad Devices

Google June 29 issued a mobile version of the Google Docs viewer for Android, iPhone and iPad to let users preview PDFs, .ppt, .doc and .docx files they've uploaded without downloading the file. It works well enough, but I still can't bear to read this stuff on a smartphone.

Google June 17 Docs' sharing functionality, which has become table stakes for today's collaboration applications. Docs is already easy to use, but anything that makes it more efficient and utilities more visible is welcome.

Google Docs Gets Better Search, File Export Utilities

Docs no longer has time to get dusty without something new happening. This week, the Docs team made several improvements around search relevance, exporting data and sharing content. It's good to see Docs getting refreshed and made more current. It had looked so Web 1.5 for too long.

Gmail Now Lets You Preview Google Docs

Google Docs users can preview the contents of a Google document, spreadsheet or presentation right in Gmail, which will automatically detect when users receive a document link and display the name and type of doc below the e-mail. This is especially useful for power users who trade a lot of work documents with colleagues and can't be bothered to open every single one.

Google Docs Revamped with Share Folders, Multifile Upload

Google Docs now has a fresh look, a shared folders feature and multiple file upload. Also, Google brought back the "Items not in folders" feature. I'm still playing with the new features, and may have more to say later. So far, so good.

Microsoft Loss of Word Could Be Google's Gain

Don't think that Google and other providers of word processing software aren't watching the Microsoft vs. i4i case. Imagine what would happen if Microsoft was no longer a factor in word processing? That would cripple Office and send millions of businesses to alternatives, such as Google Apps.

Google Docs Makeover Coming, with Questionable Sharing Change

Google said it will do away with the "Shared with..." list in the left hand pane. I'm not sure how users will feel about this. When you take away a list that people can use to decide with whom they want to share documents and replace it by telling users to type the names of people to share documents with, you're creating more work.
