The Google Voice phone management application already has 1.42 million users, 570,000 of which use it daily, according to a letter Google sent to the Federal Communications Commission this week. Business Week unearthed the data point Oct. 30 in something of an embarrassing gaffe by Google on par with the Janet Jackson Wardrobe Malfunction.

For users who don't want a Google number to use Google Voice, Google is offering a tradeoff. Today, Google released a version of Google Voice that lets users make their mobile phone number the contact point for Google Voice. The catch is that users who opt to use this "lighter version of Google Voice" won't be able to receive online voicemail, automated text transcripts, and custom voicemail greetings, a Google spokesperson told eWEEK.

Google and pundits accuse AT&T of unfairly using the network neutrality angle in its argument when it's actually about broken telco laws. This may be so, but the motive doesn't matter to me. When Google points at phone carriers like Verizon and AT&T and complains they are blocking access to applications, content and services, we tend to listen. Look, it's a bird, it's a plane... No, it's Google, swooping in as defenders of the Internet faithful. We shouldn't let Google get away with practices we spend so much time correcting carriers. It's not the method that matters, it's the practice. No one should be allowed to block calls, or everyone should.

Why try to protect Apple by asking the FCC to keep confidential how Apple rejected the Google Voice application for its iPhone App Store, only to turn around a month later and patently throw Apple under the bus? Perhaps Google leveraged Apple's reputation as a corporate stalwart of spin and deception against Apple, aiming for maximum PR damage.

Google has added an option in Gmail Labs that lets Google Voice users access their messages directly from Gmail instead of in a separate browser tab. Eventually, one envisions Google Voice as part of Google Wave, fusing voice communication with real-time collaboration. Now that could be exciting (if not a little confusing).

Now when you enable SMS-to-e-mail forwarding in the application, Google Voice will send you an e-mail alert every time you receive a new SMS on your Voice number. You can then reply to the SMS messages from e-mail. Now if only Google Voice will integrate Google Talk and video chat, offering a Skype-like PC calling service.
