Google, Microsoft Bing Trade Search Blows as They Exit 2009

I've made a point to point out how Google and Microsoft duel each other in search.

Actually, of late it's been Bing that's been beating Google to certain things. Case in point, Microsoft announced its deal to index Twitter tweets on stage at the Web 2.0 Summit in October. Google followed hours later by pre-announcing its own Twitter deal.

It reminds me of any of the number of Annie Get Your Gun "Anything You Can Do" riffs:

But maybe it's not so much that Bing is beating Google to the punch as it is Google refusing to let Bing have any of the search spotlight for more than one week. In the latest contest, Bing is hosting a search event today at 10 a.m. PST:

Google is hosting its own search shindig Monday, Dec. 7:

Any thoughts what the Bing event might include? In addition to the Bing Twitter site, Microsoft has already upgraded its visual search technology and partnered with Wolfram Alpha.

The Google event could very well be the new user interface the company is working on, the one that makes the search options more visible in the left-hand rail. You can try it by following these instructions.

I'm fairly certain Caffeine won't be involved for the Google event -- that next-gen infrastructure isn't due broadly until 2010. Your theories are welcome.

In the meantime, it's fun to watch this Bing-Google slugfest, something we weren't able to enjoy until Bing emerged from the Live Search cocoon in June. At 10 percent of the market, Bing is the scrappy upstart gunning for the 65 percent search gorilla.

As I've already written, this Google Vs. Microsoft battle is great for consumers.

Bling Shming. Still not impressed. Google's email and features far outshine anyone else.

Tim :

Bing is a joke. The search is so heavily weighted by people paying MS, it's not worth using. Google still returns far better (and less $$$ biased) searches. When I do a search for "linux" do you really think "microsoft linux" should be a top suggested search? Microsoft continues to prove it can't make anything worthwhile and relies on buying/stealing other ideas to remain on the desktop.

At Tim :

I tried the linux search. Didn't see microsoft linux as the top result.

James :

Tried BING it sucks just as bad as Bing Crosby singing White Christmas. MS should just get out of everything and do what they do best make crappy software that everyone is forced to use. I only uses Windoze and other MS products at the office because I'm forced to. At least my boss has allowed us to use Firefox as a browser and we are corporately using Google Postini as a spam filter. At home the only MS product that I use is Windoze because the family doesn't want to learn Linux.

Jim :

Bing has been really innovative since its launch.

It seems that now it's Google who is the slow-moving, reactionary one.

Also, LOL@ the guy who complained about Bing's suggestions for "linux". Not only does Bing NOT suggest "microsoft" for that term, but Google suggests "linux mint" as the first term. Do you really think MINT is the top Linux-related search? LOL

Sean :

Hello,

Does anyone know if the Google event on Dec 7th is closed to the public?

Thanks
