The Association of National Advertisers sent the Department of Justice an open letter pledging its support for the bid and asking the DOJ to swiftly bless it because it's good for the online advertising market. I expect the AAAA's letter will merit serious consideration by the DOJ. This is a wise group that harbors no illusions about the power Google has wrestled in their market.

Google's Marissa Mayer tells Digg's Kevin Rose that Bing makes Microsoft a formidable force in search, but notes that it copies some aspects of Google's search. Mayer also decries Web anonymity, arguing it diminishes accountability online.

The potential to monetize search and ads versus Google exists, but how does anyone know by the time Microhoo gets around to taking Google's search ad share that Google won't have successfully penetrated other search ad markets, particularly mobile and display ads? Microsoft and Yahoo aren't standing still, but neither will Google, which will take this challenge seriously under its "competition is just a click away" approach.

As we opined earlier, Microsoft has circled back to Yahoo for round two in the let's make a deal for search and Internet ad sweepstakes. But in a saga fraught with twists and turns, it's not what we expected.

If the computing paradigm is indeed shifting to the cloud, I agree that Microsoft must roll up some serious cloud-based assets and I don't see that being a homegrown calzone...
