Social gadgets just became available to the millions of U.S. iGoogle home page users, allowing people to play games with each other and share news content and to-do lists from their iGoogle Web pages.

New iGoogle Gadgets Leverage OpenSocial to Rival Facebook

Google Aug. 6 launched social gadgets that let users share information, play games and collaborate with friends. If Google can get some of these searchers, Gmail users and other Google Apps users to stick around longer by helping them connect with each other through the social iGoogle gadgets, it broadens the window of opportunity to show these folks ads.

ClackPoint Enables Chat via Google Friend Connect

The ClackPoint gadget enables Website owners to offer text chat, conference calling and document sharing through a gadget for Friend Connect. Google's and Facebook's programming teams will tell you that fostering the socialization of the Web -- not making money -- is the point of their activities. But this may come into play when the teams are asked what value they're bringing to their companies.

Google, Plaxo Blend OpenID, OAuth For Secure Federated ID

Google and Plaxo detailed the next step in their federated identity plans with "Hybrid Protocol," combining OpenID federated log-in with OAuth access authorization and the Google Contacts API for secure import of the user's address book. Of course, we're still in that uncomfortable spot of diverging efforts, with Google and Plaxo seemingly pitted against Facebook.

Google Paper Proves Social Web Has Become a Science

Google programmers in a white paper point out three areas where social networking sites compromise user privacy. Service providers can save themselves headaches by granting users greater control over their data online without enabling them to compromise their personal data. That's a fine line to walk ideologically and technically, but it needs to be worked out.
