Google UFO Doodles Wish H.G. Wells Happy Birthday

Earlier this month, the blogosphere was atwitter with tweets about the Google doodle showing a UFO taking the second "o" in Google.

What was this latest unsolved mystery, which I had a little fun with at the expense of X-Files nuts and "believers"?

Sci-fi and gaming geeks followed Google's breadcrumbs on Twitter and were correct in concluding that the coded tweet from alien captors: 1.12.12 25.15.21.18 15 1.18.5 2.5.12.15.14.7 20.15 21.19, translates into "All your O are belong to us" (a nod to the Japanese video game, Zero Wing).

The UFO then returned to leave crop circles, and Google tweeted lat/long coordinates for Horsell Commons, which is where the first UFO touched down in H.G. Wells' alien-Earth attack in "The War of the Worlds":

Today, Google has another doodle, with UFOs attacking Earth in an eerily peaceful looking picture:

The doodle celebrates Wells' 143rd birthday. What, no UFO-shaped cake?

OK, I won't lie. I teased believers in alien lifeforms, but I love "The War of the Worlds": the book, the 1938 Orson Welles broadcast on it and the original movie from 1953.

But I still think my peers spent too much time deciphering Google's little games and writing about them.
