Mock-up: What if Google Made a Yahoo-like Start Page?
|
A few weeks ago, when Jeremy Zawodny discovered that Google had ripped off a Yahoo page design, I thought it'd be fun to create a Google start page that looked like Yahoo's. So here it is, just a little fun what-if comp. I'm no designer, so don't yell at me for substituting the wrong fonts and getting the kerning wrong, and blah blah blah. And yeah, I know Google would never design something like this. But at the least, it gives you an idea of how Google really is a "portal," and how well all its apps fit together into a more work-oriented Yahoo start page.

I don't think there is anything that would stop a developer from making this a reality using all the apis and/or api hacks. It may be a good way to impress them enough to get a job at Google.

Hey, I kinda enjoyed this mock-up. Is that wrong? :)
Posted by Matt Cutts | January 10, 2007 2:17 PM
haha, I didn't make it to annoy Googlers, Matt, so I'm glad you dig it. Really I just wanted to see what it'd look like to have most of the Google products in one easily-digestible page.
Posted by Steve Bryant | January 10, 2007 4:06 PM
I'd use it.
Posted by BrianWGray | January 10, 2007 4:30 PM
except for the big honkin' ad, i like it.
Posted by bg | January 10, 2007 8:17 PM
Yep, that's why I left Yahoo for Google. Yahoo's so cluttered you can never find anything.
Posted by Solanole | January 10, 2007 8:56 PM
i would love a page like this for google...it doesn't have to be there official homepage, but it would be great if they had an option to make that our homepage.
great work!!!
Posted by c w | January 10, 2007 9:07 PM
I agree with Matt and bg, apart from the ad it would be cool for someone to put this together. I like the right hand box with your Mail/Blogs/Docs -- would be useful!
Posted by Jack | January 10, 2007 9:11 PM
nice mock, maybe should put something like google in your language on it.
Posted by 8O | January 10, 2007 10:27 PM
Is this photoshopped? Or did you code this? Is there a link? If not, can you send me the file you coded this in? I love it!
Posted by thelouisguy | January 10, 2007 10:38 PM
I think that it could be potentially powerful, but I would hope if google did do something like this, it was a happy medium between their current personalized start page and Yahoo!'s.
Posted by Miles | January 10, 2007 11:14 PM
the only thing i want to say about the mockup is to change the title from yahoo to google :P
just kidding...it's a very nice mockup, and very yahoo-ish indeed
Posted by Cassio | January 11, 2007 9:20 AM
Hideous. No wonder I avoid Yahoo.
Posted by the forester | January 11, 2007 11:02 AM
It is a very cool, clean site and like someone stated above it would work well as an additional page that could be called the "home page" but not necessarily the official page of www.google.com
The reason Google has the very simple search page is because that's what they're known for. It's been there for years and probably years to come. They have allowed people to make their personal home pages and maybe this is an option too, but I doubt it will replace the current home page of Google. Good work.
Posted by Mike | January 11, 2007 11:05 AM
i have to admit when i first clicked on the link from digg I was just getting ready to say your stupid and i like the overall simple style of Google. but after seeing this mock up I am a little pissed at Google for not doing something like this. It looks great go get yourself a job at Google or something
Posted by Nobel | January 11, 2007 12:06 PM
I love it!
One nitpick: Where is orkut?!?!
It's worthwhile pointing out that, with Google's personalizable home page, and with all the stuff you can put in it, you can ALMOST make this.
A while ago I made myself a "regularly used links" homepage that looks something like this. Basically a "favorites/bookmarks" page, regularly updated (especially since it links to the projects I'm working on at work, which change often). I thought most techie people did this...
Posted by airshowfan | January 11, 2007 12:11 PM
Great peace of work. Can this be used for personal use of Google products?
That is ofcourse, if you are willing to share this with all or few of us. Whether somebody want this as homepage or not. I would definitely recommend this to Google lovers & would love to use it myself. It can save a whole lot of time, if you are hard user of Google products.
Thank you for sharing this with us.
Posted by Deepak | January 11, 2007 12:15 PM
Ha ha while I do enjoy the quality of your work, the reason I go to Google is to avoid the cluttered look of sites like Yahoo. If Google adopted this, I would have to find another search engine.
Posted by Jeremy David | January 11, 2007 12:28 PM
Great job! Brought a smile to my face. Would be great if you tried it the other way around: Can Yahoo's links fit into a Google-simple page?
Posted by Michael Martine | January 11, 2007 12:29 PM
HAHA!! that looks nice!! google should totally follow yahoo
Posted by wan1980 | January 11, 2007 12:32 PM
People are allways talking about how simple google is, and how chaotic Yahoo! is, but i would love a page like this!!!!
everything in one, is this what Google HomePage 2.0 will be?
Posted by GlennDavid | January 11, 2007 12:38 PM
looks...actually nice. there's a bit of features and clutter on there i wouldnt use, and my google homepage works for me now...nice mock up though!
Posted by Jason | January 11, 2007 12:41 PM
I think it looks kinda a cool. It's a better look than the personalized homepage I use everyday.
Posted by Jason Bartholme | January 11, 2007 12:42 PM
You could call it "Yahoogle"
Posted by bromyne | January 11, 2007 12:59 PM
One question--
Why not just use the Google "Personalized Page"? It's similar, and can be customized as you desire. You could even use it as a homepage if you allow cookies.
Posted by PJ | January 11, 2007 1:00 PM
There's a reason I began to prefer google to yahoo as a search engine about four years ago, and it was the simplistic and empty front page of google. I don't give a damn about all this extra crap. I don't want to see stuff i don't care about it; the internet is too full of "good ideas" like "you may be interested in this." More often than not, the answer is no. If you were interested, you would have gone there in the first place. Now let me search in peace!
And yes, I do use youtube, gmail, and google search, and I don't care to see them all on one cluttered page.
Posted by aaron | January 11, 2007 1:09 PM
Google does do this.. or a limited form at least.
on the main google page you can choose to personalize this page... more or less it becomes a portal.. albiet limited but a home page none the less.

Posted by Gomer | January 11, 2007 1:10 PM
It seems like some of the users think this was a stab at yahoo and some admit that it seems like it can be useful.
It seems like a great mock-up. A page like this could be very useful. I would probably use it
Now, what if you built it so you can configure the individual components, yahoo's calendar, news from Digg, email from Gmail all with the same interface, with the same look-and-feel?
What do you think?
shuri
Posted by Shuri | January 11, 2007 1:15 PM
i honestly think that people just might not use it as much. I say this because one of the things that people like best about google is the simplicity of it! People that have never been on the internet either young or extremely old go to google and instantly know what to do where as they might get lost on something else. www.gotuit.com has a very simlar page that is just simply clean
Posted by Alex | January 11, 2007 1:15 PM
You just forgot one thing on the mock-up: put "Beta" next to all the buttons. Oh and persumably the portal page itself would have a "Beta" next to it...right?
Posted by Googly Eyed | January 11, 2007 1:24 PM
Yahoo homepage sucks azz - Google would not lower there standards to such a level - for obvious reasons this mocked-up page is still a Yahoo Themed Ad Factory - a massive advertisement and the add to "Get The Toolbar" - is this for Internet noobies or what? If someone wants a freaking toolbar they can search the net for one - I don't need web real estate wasted on self-promoting ads.
Doubt Google would use fixed content bars (Life, Featured, Sports) - one thing that I hate the most. Not all of give a hoot about all those content themes, so there should be a way to customize them.

For those that think thaat Yahoo's homepage is cluttered or what not...try

Posted by p_dawg | January 11, 2007 1:29 PM
Here is the thing - I like this design. It is a cool insight on google's services except one thing. Why is there a YouTube video there? I know they own YouTube, but I find it more likely that they would have GoogleVideo on their page over YouTube. Just an idea.
Posted by Aaron | January 11, 2007 1:59 PM
Heh. Nice. :-)
Posted by Jeremy Zawodny | January 11, 2007 2:06 PM
...now if we could just get Ebay to make a Google-style homepage.
Posted by Andrew | January 11, 2007 2:07 PM
Somehow it looks better than the original Yahoo homepage..maybe its just google, maybe its good karma
Posted by Naser | January 11, 2007 2:32 PM
It's cool.
I like the merger of different ui's - The Gmail/Google-Reader, Google Video interface - It's actually a bit annoying how un-standardized Yahoo interfaces are even amongst itself. I would like to see G-mail and G-reader were tabbed and within a usable interface on the homepage.
However, with the two videos, and two java interfaces two load - it violates one of the google prime directives about the homepage - speed. More and more research show that people respond to speed more than design.
Nicely done.

I don't know about you, but I would personally LOVE to have something like this, Yahoo like or not. Despite that fact I hate Yahoo, I love this little mashup. I wish someone would create a portal or something and offer services for something like this.

Two words: Well done.

gross! don't encourage them! lol
Posted by Jevon | January 11, 2007 5:42 PM
I like this. But I would not like to see this replacing the traditional simple search page that Google has. However it could be used as an additional page for those who have always wanted to have a portal that gathers all the Google applications and provides news and other stuff.
I for one use Google as my standard search engine but as for my daily portal I always use Yahoo! because of all the features that it offers.
I can confidently say that if Google ever created something like this my days of using Yahoo! as my portal would be over.
Posted by Tico | January 11, 2007 5:43 PM
what would be killer is if google added what is essentially your left-hand bar to their "Personalized Home Page". make it a module so people don't *have* to see it, but i bet money people will use it.
they need to accommodate people looking for their other services. ask.com has recently implemented this in a nice ajaxy sidebar called "Search Tools." very slick.
Posted by hh | January 11, 2007 6:50 PM
Great job...but most of it is already available as mentioned above through google personalize webpage.
I'd use it if it wasn't a heavy load.
Posted by Houndawg | January 11, 2007 8:11 PM
I like it... I think Google will take at least a baby step in that direction by the end of 2007. The purists will scream, the rest of us will either like it immediately or grow to like it. Google will increase its penetration rates and page views / ad impressions / revenue / dominance. Just my 2 cents.

Posted by Ashish Mohta | January 11, 2007 9:29 PM
Very cool, good job.
One note: I wish Google would drop their love affair with bold text. Their designers must get an additional share for every time they incorporate bold text into their apps.

I think it looks awesome, I'd really like something like that. If anybody makes something as good looking and workable as that already let me know.

I think some banner ads are to be added :)
Posted by Chris | January 11, 2007 11:35 PM
I'm joining this discussion rather late. But from what I see the ideal situation would be a search application, the interface of which has the simplicity of Google Search and the comprehensiveness of a Yahoo portal or startpage. The good news is that I have developed an application with such a scalable visual directory/interface. If there are folks in Google and Yahoo who are interested in seeing a demonstration of this next generation visual directory or scalable portal, please let me know.
In the meantime,
best regards.
Rod.
Posted by Rod King | January 12, 2007 12:08 AM
Awwwful... Google still should remain simple.
Posted by Allan Siew | January 12, 2007 12:38 AM
Haha... interesting. At the same time, I think it should give the folks at Google an idea to start thinking of a platform listing all of its products in one, easy-to-use-and-access web page.

Sure, Google could make one of these -- but they shouldn't make it the default. The strength of Google's suite of services lies not in bundling, but in modularity.
Posted by Mike Abundo | January 12, 2007 10:25 AM
Google would buy Netvibes instead of making something like that themselves.
Posted by What.se | January 12, 2007 10:48 AM
It's not about right or wrong for you but for me. I like it. It would be nice for Google to offer the option.
Posted by iZipHouston | January 12, 2007 11:36 AM
This goes against everything Google is about., great functionality, displayed in a simple format. It's very simliar to Craigslist design. It is so simple that my grandmother could figure it out, and thats why these services are so powerful.
For the uber geek, i have no problem having this option available as a personalized homepage page, but i would be very dissapointed if this was the standard.

Posted by J David | January 12, 2007 2:20 PM
I would love to see Google provide a page with all their products in one location. The Google "personalized" homepage is slow and unwieldy....perhaps if they were to take an approach that melds NetVibes (my current 'homepage') and the Yahoo front page with the ability to customize the layouts, etc.
Perhaps Google should buy Netvibes as mentioned earlier. :)

Needs pictures of hot, nubile female actresses. Only then will it be like Yahoo!
Posted by Charles | January 12, 2007 4:05 PM
For the love of the Internet, don't do it. I Google various things all day long--if I had to wait for that crap to render each time, I'd have to turn off images *and* Flash.
What really sucks is these websites that are so full of Javascript, they barely function unless you've got a CPU hot enough to cook eggs. I suspect some engines are/will start doing some kind of creepy javascript key-logging for market research, which turns out to be really, really slow on older PC's. And no, I'm not going to upgrade my PC because of a few bloated HTML forms.
Posted by Ferodynamics | January 12, 2007 5:25 PM
well you can make a page with similar functionality on the Google personal page http://www.google.com/ig.

Although there would be differences, many of the features of this mock-up could be accomplished with the Google Personalized Home Page and some custom Google Gadgets. I have made a few Google Gadgets for Google Personalized Home Page. So, if anyone would be interested in being able to accomplish something CLOSE to this mock-up by using the existing Google Personalized Home Page technology, let me know.

I use Yahoo as I very quickly check whats happening in the world as I type in my search. I often find important or interesting stuff i would not have known about if I started my search on Googles single letterbox style layout. It also shows me I am online, and the page is not cached from earlier, also useful.
